On 1 February 2003, the Columbia space shuttle lost contact with mission control while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere after completing its 28th mission, code-named STS-107. It was later discovered that it had exploded and disintegrated over Texas. Images recorded during the launch resembled male genitalia, symbolising a desire to conquer the outside world; however, the outcome was not what had been hoped for.
